Signed petitions supporting justice for Joy Gardner and calling for an independent public inquiry. The petitions were sponsored by ‘The Voice’ newspaper and ‘The Weekly Journal [The International Black Newspaper] Pride’. The petitions stated that “We the undersigned support the demand of the Joy Gardner Memorial Campaign to have a full public inquiry into the circumstances of her death. We call upon the Home Secretary, Michael Howard, to instigate such an enquiry and we request that the Black community be consulted in the composition of the panel”. File also includes stray correspondence from members of the public re support for the campaign and letters from Bernie Grant appealing for campaign funds. File also refers to organisations such as Black Women for Wages for Housework who played an important role in helping to gather signatures for the petitions.

Also includes written exchange between Bernie Grant and Sir Condon [Commissioner of Metropolitan Police] posing key questions concerning the handling of investigations [written in the knowledge of Joy Gardner’s life support machine being due to be switched off in the coming hours]. Includes background note from Police Complaints Authority relating to the investigation into the death of Joy Gardner; press releases and clippings condemning ‘sensationalist tabloid stories’ levelled against Joy Gardner; and letter from Barbara Roche [Labour MP for Hornsey and Wood Green] to Michael Howard regarding another constituent’s deportation case and the drawing of parallels with the Joy Gardner case.
